DIDCOT TOWN COUNCIL
COMMENTS ON DRAFT FINAL REPORT
ON
NATURAL GREENSPACES AND A COUNTRY PARK FOR DIDCOT – A FEASIBILITY STUDY
The report is welcomed and the general idea and concept is strongly supported. The Country Park would need to complement the surrounding countryside.
Para 4.3.4 - Concern over the non-publication, as yet, of PPG17. The Town Council are still in the process of looking for suitable flat areas for formal recreational pitches (current deficit is 19 – 23 hectares), an opportunity exists for this to be planned at the same time.
Para 5.3.2 – Welcome the need for public transport to become an integral part of any strategy.
Para 6.2.5 – Strongly support and agree with preferred options, 1, 2, 4 & 6. Options 4 and 6 would preserve the existing Mowbray Fields Nature Reserve and the Town Council’s Millennium Wood.
The Ridgeway – This is a popular destination for a country walk and the possibility of continuing the path across the A417 to the Ridgeway should be investigated.
Greenways – Agree with the idea of broad linear parks leading to rural areas and places of work which encourages biodiversity, recreation and village economies. They should be accessible for all and it should be noted that they may require a higher degree of maintenance than footpaths and bridleways and this should be factored in.
Timetable – We ask that the greenspace to the south of Didcot is given earlier priority and not left to the end. Early implementation will provide a “quick fix” which is achievable, easily accessible and will enhance Great Western Park development and other major western developments.
Didcot Town Council would welcome close involvement in all the stages of the plans for the Country Park and natural greenspaces, and would wish to comment as more detailed work develops.
