Allotments

Didcot Town Council has five allotment sites in Didcot, with an approximate total of 420 plots. These sites are located at New Road, Broadway, Wantage Road, Cockcroft Road and Mereland Road. Apart from a few exceptions allotment plots are 15 yards by 10 yards also known as 5 pole. Allotments are a great way to grow your own produce and flowers and is also a fantastic way to exercise. There are a number of rules that have to be adhered to. Bonfires are not permitted on any of the allotment sites and permission must be obtained before erecting a shed. The use of hose pipes is also not permitted on any site.

We currently have a small waiting list on all the sites, though it is worth putting your name down should you want one. To apply for an allotment you will need to complete the short form which you can download as a pdf file here. This form needs to be returned to the One Stop Shop along with a non-refundable registration fee of £15, cheques should be made payable to Didcot Town Council.

The fee for 2011/2012 financial year has been frozen at £22 per plot and £12 concession.

Allotment Charges

The charge for the 2010/11 financial year which will commence on the 1st April 2010 will be £22 or £12 for a concession. This fee has been frozen and will also be the charge for the 2011/12 financial year, see Minute 205 for further details.

The 2009/2010 charge is/was £20 per plot and £10 concession.

General News

Didcot Town Council reaffirmed that bonfires are not permitted on any allotment site. The main reason behind this is to be neighbourly to those who live adjacent to the allotments as well as for health and safety reasons.

Didcot Town Council also confirmed that trailers would not be put up the allotment sites in the near future. The increasing cost in landfill is the main reason behind this, and this waste can't be composted as it is not guaranteed to be green. We would encourage all allotment holders to compost what they can and the rest they will have to dispose of themselves.

Best Kept Allotments 2009

Digging for Victory

The Annual Allotment Awards were handed out at the John Eldridge Award Evening. For many this was the culmination of a lot of hard work on their allotments and recognition of excellence.

The winners were judged by the Town Council’s Technical manager, Brenda Andrews, who inspects plots throughout the year. Each site has a best plot winner; there is also an award for the best crops on a plot and an overall winner. Each received £25 with the overall winner receiving a total of £60.

The winners on each plot were Mr John Welch for Mereland Road, Miss Eileen Bracken for New Road, Mr Roger Remnant for Wantage Road, Mr John Moir for Cockcroft and Mr Dornford Mason for Broadway.

The Peter Aldridge Cup for the best crops was awarded to Mr Gerald Hewer. The overall winner for the third consecutive year was Mr Dornford Mason. Mr Mason received the Notcutts Shield from Mayor Margaret Turner which is awarded to the overall best allotment.
