Message from the Civic Hall Manager about the Civic Hall Project
After much behind the scenes activity I am finally in a position to give our best estimate of the redevelopment timescale.
Some of our customers book up to two years ahead, and there are not many days in a month when the hall is unused. Consequently when it became apparent that the hall was in desperate need of remedial work, there was never going to be an ideal time to do it. I initially identified a three month spell in summer 2010 which would cause least disruption. However, it soon became apparent that merely refurbishing the existing building would do little to rectify some of the original design flaws. And that the financial jump from refurbishment to redevelopment really wasn’t that great. Redevelopment would give us more usable space as well as alleviating some of the irritations which we live with on a daily basis.
It was also hoped that by doing the work in sections we would also be able to continue operating, albeit at a reduced capacity. As the plans became more advanced it was obvious that there would never be a time when one section of the redevelopment wasn’t seriously impacting on other areas. Factor in issues such as safety, mess, noise, security, parking – and it became obvious again that, with the best will in the world, we couldn’t do it and that total closure was the only option. Looking for positives, the hope is that by turning over the whole site to the contractors, they will be able to work unhindered and therefore quicker.
So what timescale are we looking at? The hall will close its doors on 30th June 2010. Our target date for completion is 31st March 2011. But as ever, with so many variables outside of my control, the end date can only be a guide. I can only suggest that whatever alternative arrangements you make are open ended, but I will endeavour to keep you posted on progress. I have produced a list of venues which I will try and tailor to the individual needs of specific groups. This is limited to Didcot, but there are halls in East Hagbourne, Harwell, etc which could be considered.
The Civic Hall is more than just walls – it is a community in its own right. It is a hope shared by myself and the Management Committee that when we reopen, we will have a venue that serves not only the converted, but successive generations who make Didcot their home.
