Town Square Name Result

We had an excellent response to the Town Square naming vote.

The top three were:-

1. Brunel Square (60 votes)
2. Meylan Square/Place (31 votes)
3. Tappins Square/Plaza (18 votes)

We have now written to South Oxfordshire District Council proposing that the square be named Brunel Square and are awaiting a response.

Thames Water's Resources Management Plan Consultation

Thames Water are inviting the general public to make comments on their Water Resources Management Plan as is their statutory requirement. The plan describes how Thames Water plan to meet the demands of the general public for water over the next 25 years, taking into account many factors including climate change and population growth.

Also part of the plan, Thames Water explains the need for the proposed reservoir in the upper Thames Valley area and details how comments made as part of previous consultations regarding this have been taken into account.

The consultation period runs until the 27th August 2008.

There are various options to view the draft plan which is 800 pages long:-

  • visit the consultation website www.thameswaterconsult.co.uk and download the plan. You can also make your comments on this website
  • request a CD or paper copy of the plan by telephoning 0800 1078001, email, or write to Public Consultations Team, Thames Water, 3rd Floor East, Clearwater Court, Reading, RG1 8DB. Thames Water would prefer to send a CD due to the size of the document.
  • copies are also available to view at Abingdon and Wantage libraries, the Thames Water offices in Reading and Swindon and at the London offices of the Consumer Council for Water.

You can submit your comments at www.thameswaterconsult.co.uk which is the preferred method. However, if you would rather do it in writing then you will need to request a paper feedback form from the contacts detailed above in bold. These forms will then need to be sent to Dawn Instone, Thames Water DWRMP consultation, Water Supply and Regulation Division, DEFRA, Area 2C, Ergon House, Horseferry Road, London SW1P 2AL.

Remember, the consultation runs until the 27th August 2008 and any comments made after that will not be considered.

New Mayor and Deputy Mayor for Didcot 2008/2009

Didcot Town Council elected a new Mayor and Deputy Mayor at its Annual Meeting on the 12th May 2008.

The Mayor Designate Councillor Tony Harbour was elected MayoMayor Making 2008r of Didcot for 2008/2009. Councillor Harbour has served on the Council since 2003 and served as Deputy Mayor to Councillor Bernard Cooper in 2007/2008. Councillor Harbour was handed his chain by the former Mayor (pictured right) and his Mayoral robes by Army Cadet Sam Haines in front of approximately 45 members of the public and invited guests.

A reception after the meeting was held which was in turn followed by the first Mayor Making Dinner, at which around 120 people attended. There were speeches by the Mayor, Ed Vaizey MP and from two members of the Mayor's chosen charities, Nadine Plunkett from The Didcot Hospital League of Friends and Sandra Spencer from SSNAP (Support for the Sick Newborn and their Parents) Based at John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford.

The new Deputy Mayor for 2008/2009 is Councillor Margaret Turner. Councillor Turner has served on Didcot Town Council since 2003 and also serves as a District Councillor. The Deputy Mayor was handed her chain by the new Mayor and her robes by ATC Cadet Sgt Hannah ClarkeMayor & Mayoress, Deputy Mayor & Consort

The Town Council elects a Mayor and Deputy Mayor to serve for one year. Meetings of the Council are chaired by the Mayor, assisted by the Deputy Mayor in accordance with standing orders. The Mayor of Didcot for 12th May 2008 to 11th May 2009 is Councillor Tony Harbour, the Mayoress is Amanda Harbour; the Deputy Mayor is Councillor Margaret Turner, the Consort is Mr Michael Turner (all pictured right).

The Prisoner of Zenda

The Prisoner of Zenda, Friday 21st November 2008 at Didcot Civic Hall. A ripping yarn based on an old classic by Anthony Hope featuring sword fights, evil monarchs and foreboding castles, and bought to the stage by North Country Theatre. Tickets available from the Civic Hall and and One Stop Shop priced £7 and £5 concession or £20 family ticket (2 adults 2 children).
