Football is coming home ..... to East Hagbourne

Over 60s from across the country will be coming together in East Hagbourne, near Didcot, to take part in a World Cup with a difference – Walking Football! The GO Active Gold National Walking Football Tournament kicks off at the East Hagbourne Pavilion on Wednesday 4 July.

South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse District Councils' GO Active Gold team has organised the competition, which sees teams from as far and wide as Birmingham and Portsmouth competing against local sides in a day-long tournament between 10am and 4pm.

There will be ten teams of six players, all aged over 60.

The rules are similar to regular football with a few variations:

  1. No running
  2. No contact
  3. The ball must not be kicked at head height

The council's GO Active Gold team works to help older people live more active lifestyles by setting up physical activities in rural areas. Since launching in 2016 the scheme has reached over 1,500 people across 48 southern Oxfordshire communities.

Cllr Lynn Lloyd cabinet member for active communities for South Oxfordshire District Council said: "Walking football has become incredibly popular and especially so in our districts thanks to the work of our GO Active Gold team. We are absolutely delighted to host this tournament at East Hagbourne and expect a combination of the weather and current interest in all things football-related to make it a great day.

Cllr Alice Badcock cabinet member for active communities for Vale of White Horse District Council, said: "GO Active Gold has helped so many older residents in rural areas who are now enjoying taking part in regular activities with other people in their communities, which is great for both their physical and mental health."
