Funding Approved for Solar Panel Installation at Fleet Meadow Community Hall

Funding Approved for Solar Panel Installation at Fleet Meadow Community Hall

Fleet Meadow Community Hall in Didcot is set to get a new solar panel installation thanks to a grant from FCC Communities Foundation worth up to £24,593.00.

The solar panel installation presents a significant opportunity to reduce energy costs, improve sustainability, and strengthen community engagement.

It is fantastic that the FCC Communities Foundation has awarded us this money, which allows us to improve this popular building.

The money will be used to reduce the building's carbon footprint, promote sustainability and demonstrate commitment to environmental stewardship, save energy costs by lowering electricity expenses, freeing up resources for building improvements and community initiatives, which will help us to keep the building affordable for members of the public.

FCC Communities Foundation is a not-for-profit business that awards grants for community projects through the Landfill Communities Fund. The Fleet Meadow Community Hall looks forward to installing the solar panels.

Fleet Meadow Community Hall has been a cherished focal point for the people of Didcot since it was originally built in 1989 by the Fleet Meadow Community Association charitable trust. From its very beginnings, the Hall was conceived not just as a building, but as a welcoming space — a place where neighbours can celebrate, connect, and grow together.

Operated under the stewardship of the Fleet Meadow Community Hall Trust (FMCHT) in partnership with Didcot Town Council, the Hall continues to serve the local community with pride. It remains available for private celebrations, group activities, recreational gatherings, rehearsals, and organizational meetings — each event adding new memories to its story. The Community Hall is opened and closed by dedicated Trust volunteers and Didcot Town's Council staff, maintaining a community-centred approach while offering a self-service facility that fosters independence and trust for all hirers.

The venue features:

  • A spacious main hall, ideal for parties, group classes, and rehearsals.
  • A well-equipped kitchen area for catering needs.
  • A committee room for meetings and smaller gatherings.
  • A small office space.
  • On-site parking for all visitors, with an outdoor space capable of accommodating a bouncy castle and outdoor play.
  • Beyond providing a flexible venue, FMCHT has ambitious and heartfelt goals that reflect its deep commitment to the people of Didcot. Established as a registered charity, the Trust works in partnership with voluntary and statutory organizations to advance education and promote recreation and leisure activities for the benefit of local residents.

Looking forward, the Trust has scheduled further sustainability projects, including proposals for solar panel installation to reduce carbon footprint and enhance operational efficiency — a testament to its vision of an environmentally responsible community space.

More than bricks and mortar, Fleet Meadow Community Hall embodies the spirit of community — a place of shared laughter, learning, resilience, and joy. Its volunteers, trustees, and partner organizations work tirelessly to ensure it remains not just a venue, but a heartfelt home for community life in Didcot.
